Chapter 13 - The Aftermath

The local news stations got ahold of the story by the very next morning.
The headline "Greedy Son Caught on Hidden Cam Pushing Elderly Mother" flashed across every major channel.
My phone blew up with messages from horrified friends and neighbors offering their support.
Meanwhile, Marcus and Vanessa were denied bail, deemed a flight risk due to the overwhelming evidence against them.
Arthur visited me at the hotel, bringing a fresh stack of legal documents that actually mattered.
"We have filed a restraining order, and we are suing them in civil court for emotional distress and damages," Arthur explained happily.
"Not to mention, the state prosecutor is going for maximum sentences on the criminal charges."
I signed the civil suit papers with my right hand, my signature bold, flawless, and undeniably mine.
I felt a profound sense of liberation, knowing I had completely excised the cancer from my family tree.
"What about the house, Margaret?" Arthur asked gently, taking the signed papers back.
"The police have finished their crime scene investigation, so you can return whenever you are ready."
I looked out the hotel window, thinking about the shattered glass and the bad memories tainting my sanctuary.
"I want it cleaned, Arthur," I commanded softly.
