Chapter 3 - Setting the Trap

Vanessa arrived an hour later, carrying a bouquet of cheap gas-station flowers and wearing a mask of fake concern.

She placed them on the tray table, leaning in close enough for me to smell her overly sweet perfume.

"You really gave us a terrible fright, Margaret," she whispered, her tone dripping with venom and sarcasm.

"The doctors say you will need to be in a care facility after this, as you clearly can't live alone anymore."

I stared at her, keeping my expression perfectly blank and unreadable.

"I want to see Arthur," I croaked out, referring to my late husband's oldest friend, who also happened to be a brilliant estate attorney.

Vanessa rolled her eyes, scoffing at the request.

"Arthur is practically retired, Margaret, you don't need a lawyer, you need rest."

I reached over and pressed the red nurse call button with my good hand.

When the nurse rushed in, I looked at her with wide, terrified eyes.

"Please, I need you to call my attorney, Arthur Sterling, it is a matter of life and death," I pleaded.

Vanessa tried to laugh it off, claiming I was just confused from the pain medication.

But the nurse frowned, sensing the heavy tension in the room, and promised she would make the call immediately.

Vanessa shot me a murderous glare, but she couldn't do anything with the medical staff watching her.

The first piece of my trap had just been set in motion.
