Chapter 5 - The Safe RoomThey reached the heavy steel door of the safe room in the sublevels.

Cassian rapidly punched in a twelve-digit code, and the hydraulic locks hissed open.

They shoved Dante inside, and Elena stood guard at the doorway while Marcus secured the rear.

"Get in!" Cassian yelled at her.

Elena backed into the room, her eyes scanning the dark hallway until the heavy door slammed shut.

The safe room was a concrete bunker, lined with weapons, medical supplies, and surveillance monitors.

Dante slumped against the wall, groaning as Marcus began to dress his gunshot wound properly.

Cassian turned to the bank of monitors, frantically tapping the keyboard to bring up the camera feeds.

Half the screens were black, filled with static from the electronic jamming.

Elena leaned her rifle against the wall and walked over to the medical kit.

She pulled out a syringe of morphine and handed it to Marcus.

Then, she turned to face Cassian.

"The jamming signal is localized," she stated, looking at the static screens.

"It is bouncing off the internal Wi-Fi repeaters."

Cassian crossed his arms, leaning against the console as he looked her up and down.

"Who do you really work for, Elena?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"Right now, I work for you," she answered, holding his gaze without flinching.

"I need a better answer than that," he warned.

"I used to work for people who don't exist, doing things that never happened," she said softly.

"I retired."

"Clearly, retirement doesn't suit you," Cassian murmured.
