Chapter 5 - The Legal Reality

At eight o'clock the next morning, I was already sitting in my lawyer’s downtown office.
My attorney, a ruthless powerhouse named Sarah, poured me a fresh cup of coffee.
“You look remarkably calm for a woman who just kicked her husband to the curb,” Sarah noted with a proud smirk.
“I am done crying over a man who never respected me,” I replied, taking a sip of the bitter brew.
“I want a divorce, Sarah, and I want sole physical custody of Leo.”
Sarah opened a thick manila folder, pulling out a copy of my ironclad prenuptial agreement.
“Beatrice really shot herself in the foot with this contract,” Sarah laughed, tapping the legal paper.
“She demanded an absolute separation of assets to protect Liam’s trust fund.”
“That means he has absolutely no legal claim to your house, your savings, or your business investments.”
I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders, thanking God I had hired a brilliant lawyer.
Suddenly, my cell phone rang, and Liam’s name flashed aggressively across the screen.
Sarah gestured for me to answer it and put the device on speakerphone.
“Nora, you need to wire me ten thousand dollars right now,” Liam demanded immediately without even saying hello.
“Excuse me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at Sarah.
“Mom’s credit cards are all declining, and the hotel is demanding a deposit for the week,” he explained frantically.
“Then you should probably find a cheaper motel, Liam,” I replied coldly.
“I am cutting off your access to my personal checking account immediately.”
“You cannot do that, we are married!” he screamed into the receiver.
“Watch me,” I stated plainly, before hanging up the phone entirely.

Sarah smiled like a shark smelling blood in the water.
“Let’s go to the bank,” she said.
