Chapter 2 - The Packing

I stayed in the nursery for exactly two hours, rocking Leo to sleep while listening to the chaos downstairs.
I could hear Beatrice hysterically crying, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floors.
Liam was frantically making phone calls, probably trying to find a luxury hotel that would accommodate her ridiculous standards.
Not once did he come upstairs to check on his newborn son or his postpartum wife.
He was entirely consumed with managing his mother’s fragile ego.
When Leo finally fell into a deep sleep, I laid him gently in his wooden crib.
I unlocked the door and walked out to the landing, leaning over the oak railing to look down.
Beatrice was aggressively shoving her expensive silk blouses into a massive Louis Vuitton suitcase.
She looked up and glared at me, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.
“You are going to regret this, you classless brat,” she hissed like a cornered snake.
“My son is going to divorce you, and we will take that baby away from you forever.”
I walked slowly down the stairs, pulling my cell phone out of my pocket.
“If you threaten me or my child again, I will have you arrested for trespassing,” I warned her calmly.
Liam rushed into the hallway, holding a stack of Beatrice’s designer shoe boxes.
“Stop instigating, Nora, she is just upset because you are acting completely unhinged,” he snapped.
“I am acting like a mother protecting her peace,” I fired back, my eyes locking onto his.
“And since you are so eager to defend her, you can pack your bags and leave with her.”
Liam dropped the shoe boxes onto the floor with a loud, shocking thud.
“What did you just say to me?” he asked, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief.

“I said get out of my house, Liam.”
The shock on his face was the most satisfying thing I had seen all year.
