Chapter 11 - The Whistleblower

Three days later, a strange man knocked nervously on my reinforced front door.
I recognized him instantly as David, one of Liam’s former colleagues from the investment firm.
I cautiously opened the door, keeping the heavy security chain locked firmly in place.
“Nora, I saw the news about Liam’s arrest on Facebook,” David started, looking incredibly anxious.
“I need to tell you the truth before this entire scandal blows up completely.”
I unchained the door and let him step into the foyer, offering him a seat.
David looked around nervously before dropping an absolute bombshell.
“Liam was fired from the firm over eight months ago for embezzling client funds,” David revealed quietly.
My heart skipped a beat as I processed the massive, unbelievable lie.
“He has been leaving the house in a suit every single day,” I argued, totally stunned.
“He was going to the casino, Nora, trying to win back the money he stole,” David explained with pity in his eyes.
“The firm agreed not to press charges if he quietly paid back the stolen amount within a year.”
That explained exactly why Liam was so desperate to forge a mortgage on my house.
He wasn't just trying to save his mother from debt; he was trying to save himself from a massive grand larceny charge.
I thanked David for his bravery and immediately called Sarah to update her on this vital information.
My fake husband had built our entire marriage on a terrifying, precarious mountain of lies.
He was a desperate, cornered criminal, and I had almost gone down with his sinking ship.
