Chapter 12 - The Deposition

A month later, Liam sat across from me in a sterile, brightly lit legal conference room.
He looked absolutely horrific, having lost weight and sprouted a messy, unkempt beard.
Beatrice sat next to him, clutching her fake designer bag and glaring daggers at my face.
It was time for the official divorce deposition, and everything was being strictly recorded on video.
Sarah paced around the table like a tiger hunting its absolutely helpless prey.
“Mr. Sterling, you claim on these financial disclosures that you are currently employed as a senior broker,” Sarah stated smoothly.
“Yes, that is correct,” Liam lied effortlessly, entirely under federal oath.
Sarah smiled, pulling out a thick, official document stamped by his former employer.
“Then how do you explain this termination letter, dated eight months ago, citing massive financial embezzlement?” she asked loudly.
Liam’s face instantly drained of all color, turning a sickly shade of pale gray.
Beatrice gasped loudly, turning to look at her golden boy in absolute horror.
“You told me you were on a paid sabbatical!” Beatrice shrieked, completely breaking her composed character.
“He also lied about trying to forge a massive mortgage on my client’s home,” Sarah continued ruthlessly.
She slammed the printed emails with the loan sharks directly onto the glass table.
Liam buried his face in his hands, completely unable to utter a single word in his defense.
His expensive, high-powered lawyer immediately requested an emergency recess, realizing his client had committed perjury.
