Chapter 10 - The Secret Debt

I stared at the financial documents, my mind racing as all the puzzle pieces finally clicked together.
Beatrice didn't hate me because I was unrefined or career-driven.
She hated me because I was entirely independent, and she couldn't easily control my money.
Liam hadn't married me out of love; he had married me to secure a permanent ATM machine for his mother.
“Look at this specific email exchange,” Sarah pointed to a highlighted section on the screen.
It was a chain of messages between Liam and a shady private lender.
Liam had been secretly trying to take out a second mortgage on my house using forged signatures.
He was desperately trying to secure half a million dollars to pay off Beatrice’s loan sharks.
If I hadn't kicked them out when I did, I would have lost my home to absolute criminals.
A cold, terrifying chill washed over my entire body.
“This is criminal fraud, Sarah,” I whispered, clutching the tablet with shaking hands.
“Exactly,” Sarah nodded, a predatory smile forming on her lips.
“We are not just going to divorce him, Nora.”
“We are going to send him to federal prison.”
We immediately drove straight to the district attorney’s office to hand over the evidence.
The prosecutor was absolutely thrilled to build a massive fraud case against the prominent Sterling family.

I realized then that this was no longer just a messy family dispute over a toxic mother-in-law.
It was a desperate fight for my survival, my son's future, and total, unmerciful justice.
