Chapter 3 - The Departure

“You cannot kick me out of my own home, Nora!” Liam shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.
“Actually, I can, because your name is not on the deed, the mortgage, or the property taxes,” I corrected him.
“My lawyer made sure of that when we signed the prenuptial agreement that your mother insisted upon.”
Beatrice had forced that prenup to protect Liam’s supposed future inheritance.
She never imagined it would be the exact weapon I used to throw him out on the street.
“I am your husband, I have legal residency rights!” he argued, though he looked entirely panicked.
“Then I will call the police right now and have them escort you out for creating a hostile environment for my newborn,” I countered.
I held up my phone, my thumb hovering directly over the emergency dial button.
Liam knew I wasn't bluffing, and he knew a police presence would ruin his pristine country club reputation.
“Fine,” he spat, his face twisted in absolute disgust.
“I will leave, but when you come begging for me to come back, the answer will be no.”
He stomped upstairs to our master bedroom, violently throwing his clothes into a duffel bag.
Beatrice stood by the front door, looking completely smug as if she had just won a grand prize.
“He will never forgive you for this,” she whispered maliciously as I walked past her.
“I am not looking for his forgiveness, Beatrice, I am looking for my freedom,” I replied.
Twenty minutes later, Liam dragged his bags down the stairs without looking in my direction.
He didn't even ask to say goodbye to his sleeping son.
The heavy front door slammed shut behind them, shaking the picture frames on the walls.

I immediately walked over to the security panel and changed the alarm code.
The toxic venom was finally drained from my home.
