Chapter 19 - The Nursery

I took a much-needed break from my endless corporate meetings to visit the brightly lit nursery.
Victoria was now a perfectly healthy, thriving six-month-old, babbling happily in her expensive wooden crib.
She had my bright eyes, completely and utterly untouched by the terrible darkness of her biological father.
I gently picked her up, holding her warm, soft little body tightly against my chest.
“We finally did it, little bird,” I whispered to her, pressing a loving kiss to the top of her head.
The real world outside these fortified walls was still incredibly dangerous and cruel.
But I had successfully built an absolutely impenetrable fortress around her to keep her safe.
She would grow up deeply knowing her own strength, knowing her immense worth, and knowing the powerful legacy she carried.
She would never, ever be forced to cower in fear before a man who sought to control her.

I carried her over to the massive window, looking out over the rolling, green hills of our beautiful estate.
The terrible storm had finally passed, leaving behind a clear, brilliant blue sky.
