Chapter 9 - The Double Cross

Before I could pull the trigger, the warehouse doors burst open. Bright flashlights blinded me. "Drop the weapon, Vance!" a voice barked.

It was Detective Miller, flanked by four heavily armed SWAT officers. Eleanor immediately began to sob, sinking to her knees. "Help me! He killed my daughter, and now he's trying to kill me!"

I realized the trap too late. The text message on the burner phone hadn't just been to lure the hitman; it had been to lure me. Eleanor had tipped off the cops, framing me for Clara's murder and the hitman's death.

"Miller, she set this up!" I shouted. "Drop the gun, David! Now!" I had a choice. Surrender and let Eleanor win, or run and become a fugitive to finish the job. I threw a flashbang grenade I had stripped from the dead hitman. The warehouse exploded in blinding white light. I dove through a side window, shattering the glass, and vanished into the alley.
