Chapter 14 - The Distraction

I couldn't take out two armed cops in a crowded hospital without starting a bloodbath. I needed a distraction.
I slipped into the electrical maintenance room down the hall. Finding the breaker box, I isolated the circuits for the fourth floor's non-essential lighting and fire alarms. I pulled the fire alarm and simultaneously cut the lights to the hallway.
The shrieking siren shattered the quiet hospital. Red emergency strobes flashed. Chaos erupted as nurses scrambled to secure patients.

"Code Red! Fourth floor!" a voice blared over the intercom. I peeked out. The two cops guarding my kids' room had stepped away from the door, looking down the corridor for smoke. Eleanor, however, didn't panic. In the flashing red light, I saw her stand up, slip a syringe out of her purse, and slip inside Room 412.
I broke into a dead sprint.
