Chapter 6 - A Desperate Escape

I didn't make it to Greg's house. As I drove down the winding canyon road toward his neighborhood, a pair of blinding headlights suddenly appeared in my rearview mirror. A massive black SUV was riding my bumper, accelerating hard.
My tactical instincts kicked in. I downshifted, taking a hairpin turn at forty miles an hour. The SUV didn't back off. It rammed my rear quarter panel, sending my truck fishtailing toward the guardrail. Below was a hundred-foot drop into a rocky ravine.
Whoever was driving wasn't trying to scare me. They were trying to silence me.

I slammed the brakes, letting the SUV blow past me, then accelerated, pitting my heavy steel bumper against their rear tire. The SUV spun out, smashing violently into the rock wall. I pulled over, drawing the SIG Sauer P226 I kept in the glovebox. I approached the smoking wreckage, weapon raised.
The driver's door kicked open. A man in a black tactical mask stumbled out, raising a suppressed pistol. I didn't hesitate. I fired two rounds center mass. The man dropped. I pulled off his mask. I had never seen him before. This wasn't Greg. This was a professional hitman.
