Sarah had played the perfect victim at the hospital, sobbing hysterically into her phone. It was the performance of a lifetime. I realized how blind I had been.

I stole a car and drove to Greg and Sarah's upscale suburban home. I bypassed the alarm system and slipped inside. I could hear muffled arguing coming from the master bedroom.

"He's still out there, Sarah!" Greg was pacing. "Vance isn't going to stop until he kills us all!" "Calm down, you idiot," Sarah's voice was sharp, utterly devoid of the fear she had shown at dinner. "Eleanor has the cops looking for him. Once they shoot him, we get the trust fund. All of it."

"I can't do this anymore," Greg cried. "I didn't want the kids to die! You said it would just put Clara to sleep!" "Clara had to die!" Sarah hissed. "She treated us like garbage! She flaunted her wealth while we drowned in debt."

I kicked the bedroom door open. Both of them froze.
