Chapter 5 - The Embezzler’s Confession

I pressed my forearm harder against his throat. "Give me one good reason not to snap your neck right here."

"Clara!" he choked out. "Clara found out! That’s why someone wanted her dead!"

I eased up a fraction. "Found out what?" Marcus gasped for air, sliding down the bookshelf. "The company's accounts. Seven million dollars has been bled dry over the last two years. Clara figured it out last week. She was going to the feds on Monday. She told me she had proof."

"Who was she investigating?" I demanded. "Your brother-in-law," Marcus whispered. "Greg. He was our lead accountant. He handles all the offshore shell companies."

Greg. The quiet, pathetic brother-in-law who stood paralyzed while my family choked to death. It made terrifying sense. Greg was drowning in debt; everyone knew it. If Clara went to the FBI, Greg would go to federal prison for decades. I let Marcus drop to the floor. "If you run, Marcus, the cops will think you did it. Stay put."

I walked out into the night. Greg was next.
