Chapter 18 - The Awakening

The sound of handcuffs clicking around Eleanor's wrists was the sweetest sound I had ever heard. She screamed curses at me as they dragged her out of the room. Miller lowered his gun.

"You're not totally cleared yet, Vance," Miller said gruffly. "But if this drive shows what you say it shows... you might just get your life back." "I don't care about my life," I said, turning back to the hospital beds.

The room fell quiet again, save for the rhythmic beeping of the monitors. I pulled a chair between Leo and Mia's beds and took both of their small, cold hands in mine.

I sat there for three days. I barely ate. I didn't sleep. I just watched their chests rise and fall, praying to whatever was listening.

On the morning of the fourth day, I felt a weak squeeze. I looked down. Leo's eyelids fluttered. "Dad?" he croaked, his voice barely a whisper.
