Chapter 13 - The Race Against Time

I drove the stolen sedan like a madman, blowing through red lights and weaving through midnight traffic. My scanner app buzzed with police chatter—they had a warrant out for my arrest, and my face was plastered at every hospital entrance.
I couldn't just walk through the front doors. I parked two blocks away and scaled the fire escape on the side of the hospital building. I knew the ICU was on the fourth floor.
I jimmied the window of a janitor's closet and slipped into the sterile hallway. Nurses were doing their nightly rounds. I grabbed a doctor's lab coat from a breakroom hook and pulled a surgical mask over my face.

My heart pounded against my ribs. I had survived IEDs and sniper fire, but the fear of losing my children was a terror I couldn't quantify. I rounded the corner to the Pediatric ICU. Room 412.
Standing outside the glass doors were two police officers. Detective Miller's men. And sitting calmly on a bench, holding a cup of tea, was Eleanor.
