Chapter 3 - Confessions in the Dark

The ride in the back of the armored sedan was the longest of Julian's entire life.

Lily sat glued to his side, her small, dirty fingers clutching his expensive tuxedo jacket as if he might disappear again.

"Thomas, tell me everything on the way," Julian demanded, his voice thick with unshed tears.

The older man gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white in the dim light of the dashboard.

"Your mother told Elena that if she didn't sign the divorce papers, she would frame Elena for corporate espionage," Thomas confessed.

Julian's heart stopped beating for a second.

"She also threatened to hire men to take Lily away in the middle of the night," Thomas added, his voice breaking.

Lily buried her face in Julian's chest, her tiny shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"Mama was so scared, Papa," Lily whispered into his shirt.

"She packed one bag, and we ran away in the rain while you were in London," the little girl cried.

Julian kissed the top of her head, vowing to destroy anyone who had made his daughter cry.
