Chapter 9 - Chloe’s Panic

The immediate aftermath of the ballroom confrontation was an absolute catastrophe for the Montgomerys. Whispers spread through the Drake Hotel like wildfire. Within ten minutes, the keynote speaker—Chloe’s father, Richard Sterling—quietly instructed the event organizers to cancel his speech announcing the corporate merger. The Sterling family did not amass their maritime fortune by entangling themselves with toxic assets, and Julian Montgomery had just become the most radioactive man in Chicago.

In the secluded VIP anteroom behind the main ballroom, Chloe paced the carpeted floor like a caged panther, her manicured hands tearing at the fabric of her designer clutch. Julian sat on a velvet sofa, his head buried in his hands, while Eleanor paced frantically behind him, drinking champagne directly from the bottle in a total abandonment of her high-society decorum.

"You lied to me!" Chloe shrieked, turning on Julian with eyes wild with fury and panic. She tore the five-carat engagement ring off her finger and hurled it directly at his face. The heavy diamond bounced off his forehead and skittered into a corner. "You told me she was a penniless nobody! You told me she was an orphan who lived in a studio apartment! How the hell did you marry Arthur Vance's granddaughter without knowing who she was?!"

"I didn't know!" Julian yelled back, jumping to his feet, his face red with frustration and terror. "She never mentioned her family! She drove a ten-year-old Honda! She bought her clothes at discount stores! How was I supposed to know she was hiding a three-hundred-billion-dollar dynasty behind a teacher's salary?!"

"Because she was testing you, you arrogant idiot!" Eleanor screamed, slamming the champagne bottle onto a side table. "The Vance family is famous for their paranoia regarding fortune hunters! She wanted to see if you loved her without the money! And instead of playing the devoted husband until the trust fund unlocked, you dragged her out into a blizzard and left her for dead!"

"We left her for dead, Mother!" Julian snapped back, pointing an accusatory finger at Eleanor. "You were the one who brought the forged waivers to the hospital! You were the one who paid the security guards to throw her in the back of the SUV!"

Chloe stepped backward toward the door, her face pale as she realized the sheer legal gravity of what they were confessing to in her presence. "You actually did it... you tried to kill her and the baby," she whispered, her voice trembling with horror. "My God, my father’s company is linked to yours in the preliminary merger filings. If the Vance Empire targets Montgomery Real Estate, they’ll drag Sterling Maritime down into the audit investigations just by association!"

"Chloe, darling, wait," Julian pleaded, reaching out to grab her hands. "We can fix this! We just need your father’s legal team to help us frame this as a misunderstanding—"

"Don't touch me!" Chloe screamed, slapping his hands away with revulsion. "We are through, Julian! The engagement is over, the merger is dead, and if the police or the Vance lawyers ask me a single question, I am telling them everything I know about your forged bank accounts to save my own family!" She turned and sprinted out of the anteroom, slamming the heavy door behind her, leaving mother and son trapped alone in the wreckage of their own making.
