Chapter 17 - The Arrests

At midnight on Thursday, the final tactical perimeter closed around Julian Montgomery. Acting on real-time cell phone triangulation provided by Sebastian Vance’s cyber-warfare division, a joint task force of United States Marshals, State Police Homicide Detectives, and FBI Tactical Swat Operatives surrounded the rundown motel on the industrial South Side of Chicago.

There was no polite knock on the door, no opportunity for negotiation. The motel room door was blown off its hinges by a precision breaching charge, bathing the dark room in blinding strobe lights and the deafening screams of tactical commands.

"FBI! Federal arrest warrant! Get on the ground! Show me your hands right now!"

Julian, who had been attempting to stuff bundles of emergency cash and a fake passport into a duffel bag, scrambled backward across the bed in blind terror. Before he could even reach the window, three heavily armored federal agents swarmed him, dragging him off the mattress and slamming him face-down onto the dirty carpet.

"Julian Montgomery, you are under arrest for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping of a Minor, Federal Wire Fraud, and Civil RICO violations!" the lead agent barked as heavy, high-security steel cuffs were locked around Julian’s wrists and ankles. "You have the right to remain silent! If you give up the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law!"

Simultaneously, at the secure medical ward of the County Jail downtown, federal marshals arrived at the bedside of Eleanor Montgomery, whose hand had been surgically reconstructed following the sniper interception at the clinic ambush. Despite her screams of indignation and threats of lawsuits, she was stripped of her silk hospital gown, dressed in a standard-issue orange prison jumpsuit, and chained to her bed frame as her capital murder indictment was read aloud to her in front of the attending medical staff.

By dawn on Friday, mother and son were reunited for the first time since their empire collapsed—not in a luxury ballroom or a marble mansion, but in the sterile, fluorescent-lit processing center of the Federal Metropolitan Detention Center.

They sat on concrete benches in adjacent holding cells, separated by thick wire mesh, stripped of their designer clothes, their jewelry, and their dignity. As the flashbulbs of the police booking cameras flashed in their faces, recording their haggard, terrified mugshots for global public broadcast, Julian looked through the wire mesh at his mother.

"You said she was nobody, Mother," Julian whispered, tears of impotent rage and despair tracing paths down his unwashed cheeks. "You said nobody would ever look for her."

Eleanor didn't answer. She sat staring at the concrete floor of her cell, her uncombed gray hair hanging over her face, finally realizing the crushing, absolute truth: they hadn't just lost their wealth. They had lost their humanity, their freedom, and their lives the moment they left that baby in the snow.
