Chapter 14 - The Trap Snap

The traffic light at the intersection of Michigan Avenue turned red. The unmarked black SUV drifted smoothly to a halt in the center lane, its heavy, run-flat tires crunching against the salted asphalt. In the alleyway fifty yards back, Miller slammed his foot down on the accelerator of the reinforced utility van. The engine roared, tires spinning on the ice before catching traction and launching the heavy vehicle out of the shadows, speeding directly toward the driver's side doors of the stationary SUV.

"Hit them! Hit them now!" Eleanor shrieked from the passenger seat, her knuckles white around the silver revolver.

At the exact second impact seemed inevitable, the trap snapped shut with military perfection.

From the side streets directly north and south of the intersection, two massive, armored Vance Industries tactical response trucks—weighing twelve tons each—surging into the roadway with blinding speed. They didn't slam their brakes; they executed a precision, synchronized interception maneuver, pulling directly into the path of the speeding utility van, creating an solid wall of ballistic steel between Eleanor’s vehicle and the baby's transport.

Miller screamed, slamming both feet onto the brake pedal. But on the icy asphalt, the heavy utility van couldn't stop in time. It crashed headlong into the reinforced side plating of the Vance tactical truck with a deafening, metal-crunching explosion. The front hood of the van crumpled like tin foil, airbags detonating instantly, filling the cabin with white smoke and the smell of burning powder.

Before the smoke could even clear, the doors of the tactical trucks flew open. Eight Vance security operatives dressed in full urban combat gear swarmed the wrecked van, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting red dots through the shattered windshield.

"Driver, hands out the window right now!" a command boomed over a tactical bullhorn. "Any sudden movement will be met with lethal force! Drop your weapons!"

In the passenger seat, Eleanor pushed her deflated airbag aside, coughing violently as blood from a forehead laceration dripped into her eyes. Desperate and completely unhinged, she ignored the commands, forcing her shattered door open and stumbling out onto the icy street with her silver revolver raised toward the SUV.

"Give me my granddaughter!" she screamed into the swirling snow, pointing the trembling gun toward the tinted windows of the black vehicle. "I have rights! I am an Montgomery!"

A single, precision sniper shot fired from the rooftop of a neighboring building echoed over the street. The bullet didn't hit Eleanor’s body; it struck the steel barrel of her silver revolver with pinpoint accuracy, shattering the weapon in her hand and sending metal fragments flying across the ice. Eleanor screamed in agony, dropping to her knees on the frozen asphalt, clutching her numb, stinging hand to her chest.

The rear door of the black SUV opened slowly. But it wasn't a neonatal nurse holding a baby carrier who stepped out onto the snowy street.

It was Elena Vance, wearing her tailored coat, her face cold and expressionless as she looked down at the woman kneeling in the slush before her. Behind her stepped Sebastian, his phone holding a running video recording of the entire ambush.

"Looking for Aria, Eleanor?" Elena asked softly, walking until she stood barely three feet from her former mother-in-law. "My daughter has been resting safely in the nursery at the estate all afternoon. You really think I would let you within five miles of my child after what you did in the blizzard? You just committed armed assault and attempted kidnapping on federal cameras. Your game is officially over."
