Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The silence in the immediate vicinity of the Montgomerys was suffocating. Unable to bear the crushing weight of Elena’s gaze from across the room, Julian’s survival instincts—fueled by sheer, delusional arrogance—overrode his panic. He convinced himself there had been a catastrophic misunderstanding. Perhaps she had survived, somehow been rescued by wealthy benefactors, or perhaps this was a twisted test. If he could just reach her, play the distraught, overjoyed husband in front of the press and the city's elite, he could force her to play along to avoid a public scandal.
"Elena!" Julian called out, breaking away from his mother's desperate grasp and striding across the ballroom floor toward the Vance entourage. He threw his arms out, his face contorting into an expression of theatrical, tearful relief. "Oh, my God, Elena! You're alive! The police told me you were lost in the storm! Darling, where is Aria?! What happened to you?!"
He reached out his hands to grab her velvet-draped shoulders, intending to pull her into a public embrace before the flashing cameras of the society photographers.
He never touched her.
With lightning-fast, brutal efficiency, Sebastian Vance stepped forward, intercepting Julian mid-stride. Sebastian’s large hand clamped around Julian’s right wrist with a crushing, bone-grinding force that made the real estate developer yelp in pain, his knees buckling instantly as he was brought to a halt barely three feet from Elena.
"Touch my sister again, Montgomery, and I will break your arm in twelve places in front of this entire room," Sebastian murmured, his voice low, conversational, and chillingly lethal.
The surrounding socialites gasped, taking collective steps backward as the tension in the room spiked into dangerous territory. Elena raised her hand slightly, signaling for Sebastian to release him. Sebastian flung Julian’s arm away with a look of utter disgust.
Elena took one slow, deliberate step toward her husband. The scent of her expensive perfume—jasmine and cold rain—washed over him. She looked down at him as he massaged his throbbing wrist, her eyes entirely devoid of the warmth, love, or fear he had known for three years.
"Mr. Montgomery," Elena said, her voice projecting clearly over the hushed ballroom, dripping with aristocratic detachment. "I see you are as theatrical as ever. But I suggest you save your performances for the federal prosecutors. You are going to need a very convincing script to explain how you and your mother forged signatures on trust waivers, bribed hospital staff, and attempted to murder the legal heir to the Vance Banking Group."

Julian’s eyes darted wildly around the room, witnessing the horrified expressions of his peers, his bankers, and his business partners. "Elena... please... what are you saying? You're my wife! We have a daughter! Let's go somewhere private and talk about this!"
"We have nothing to talk about, Julian," Elena replied, her tone dropping into an icy whisper meant only for his ears. "You told me to freeze to death in the ditch. I survived the cold. But I can assure you, by the time I am finished with your family, you are going to pray the snow had taken you instead." She turned on her heel, her velvet train sweeping gracefully across the floor, leaving him standing publicly humiliated and completely broken in the center of the ballroom.
