Chapter 1 - The Headlights in the Dark

The roar of the engine cut through the howling wind before the vehicle even materialized out of the swirling whiteout. Elena pressed her back against the frozen dirt of the ditch, her body shaking so violently that her teeth clicked together in a rapid, agonizing rhythm. Beneath her heavy coat, baby Aria’s cries had faded into a faint, terrifying whimper. The cold wasn't just on Elena's skin anymore; it had seeped into her bones, slowing her blood and dragging her toward a dark, numb sleep. She knew that if she closed her eyes for even a second, neither of them would ever wake up.

The twin beams of halogen light swept across the snowbank, blinding and sharp. A massive, matte-black tactical convoy—three armored SUVs built to withstand minefields—screeched to a halt on the icy asphalt above them. Heavy doors flew open. The sound of combat boots crunching into the deep snow echoed over the storm. Elena tried to scream, tried to beg for help, but her lips were blue and cracked, frozen shut by the subzero wind.

"Check the tree line!" a deep, authoritative voice commanded. "Thermal scanners picked up two heat signatures in the ditch! Move!"

A tall figure cloaked in a heavy wool overcoat slid down the snowy embankment. As the man reached the bottom, the beam of his tactical flashlight illuminated Elena’s pale, frostbitten face. He froze. For a split second, the hardened, lethal composure of the man shattered.

"Elena," he breathed, his voice breaking with a emotion that defied the freezing cold.

Elena squinted through her crusted eyelashes. Even through the blur of hypothermia and tears, she recognized the sharp jawline, the piercing gray eyes, and the silver signet ring on his right hand—a crest depicting a falcon rising above a crown. It was Sebastian Vance. Her older brother. The CEO of Vance Industries and the ruthless protector of their family’s global dynasty.

"Sebastian..." she whispered, her voice barely a scrape against the wind. "My baby... please... save Aria..."

Sebastian didn't waste another second. He stripped off his thermal overcoat, wrapping it securely around both Elena and the shivering bundle in her arms. He scooped her up against his chest as if she weighed nothing, his powerful stride effortlessly carrying them up the steep, icy embankment toward the waiting Maybach convoy.

"You're safe now, little sister," Sebastian vowed into her frozen hair, his tone carrying a lethal promise that would soon shake the entire city of Chicago. "We found you. And whoever did this to you is going to burn."
