Chapter 3 - Awakening in the Fortress

When Elena opened her eyes twenty-four hours later, the blinding whiteout of the blizzard had been replaced by the warm, golden sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance estate's private medical wing. The room was expansive, decorated in soothing tones of cream and mahogany, with state-of-the-art diagnostic monitors humming silently in the background. Resting in a custom-built, temperature-controlled bassinet right beside her bed was Aria, sleeping peacefully in a silk sleeper, her cheeks rosy and full of life.

Sitting in a high-backed leather armchair at the foot of the bed was Arthur Vance. At eighty-two years old, the patriarch of the Vance global banking and energy consortium still possessed the intimidating, regal aura of a king. Resting both hands on the silver handle of his walking cane, he watched his granddaughter with eyes that had seen empires rise and fall.

"You are awake," Arthur said, his deep, resonant voice filling the quiet room. He stood up slowly, walking to the side of the bed to place his weathered hand over hers. "The doctors assure me that there will be no permanent tissue damage to either you or my great-granddaughter. You have always been extraordinarily resilient, Elena. Even when you were foolish enough to run away from your legacy."

"I wanted to be loved for who I was, Grandfather, not for your bank accounts," Elena said softly, her voice gaining strength as the warm IV fluids did their work. She looked down at her wrists, where the purple bruises were now bandaged with soothing arnica dressings. "I learned my lesson. The world doesn't respect innocence. It only respects power."

Arthur nodded grimly, his expression hardening into granite. "Indeed. While you slept, Sebastian’s intelligence division compiled a comprehensive dossier on the Montgomery family. Julian’s real estate firm is currently overleveraged by four hundred million dollars. He is facing imminent bankruptcy. That is why he rekindled his engagement with Chloe Sterling—her family's maritime trust fund is the only thing that can save his company from liquidation."

"And to get that money, he needed to get rid of his low-class wife quickly and quietly," Elena realized, a cold, icy fury beginning to crystallize in her chest. The girl who had wept and begged for mercy in the snowbank was dead. In her place stood the legitimate heir to a three-hundred-billion-dollar empire.

"They filed a formal missing persons report this morning, claiming you abandoned your child and fled the state due to postpartum psychosis," Arthur revealed, his tone dripping with disdain. "What are your orders, Elena? I can have Julian and his mother quietly erased from this earth before nightfall."

Elena looked at her sleeping daughter, then back to her grandfather. "No," she said firmly. "Death is too easy for what they did to my baby. I want them to build their castle of cards. And then I want to be the one who burns it down while they watch."
