Chapter 4 - The Montgomerys' False Victory

Across town in the exclusive Gold Coast district of Chicago, the Montgomery mansion was alive with celebratory warmth and champagne toasts. Outside, the blizzard had finally cleared, leaving the city buried beneath three feet of pristine snow, but inside the formal dining room, crystal chandeliers illuminated an atmosphere of arrogant triumph.

Julian stood by the marble fireplace, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. Beside him stood Chloe Sterling, looking immaculate in a tailored designer dress, her hand resting possessively on his arm. She was wearing the massive, five-carat diamond engagement ring that Julian had presented to her barely twelve hours after dumping his wife and newborn child into a frozen ditch.

"To a seamless transition," Eleanor Montgomery toasted, raising her crystal flute from the head of the table. Her eyes glittered with predatory satisfaction. "The police bought the narrative entirely. A hysterical, low-income girl overwhelmed by childbirth, fleeing the hospital without her coat or her infant. By the time the spring thaw arrives and they find whatever is left of her out in the woods, the divorce will have been granted by default, and Julian will already be married into the Sterling dynasty."

Chloe laughed, a light, dismissive sound. "I still can't believe you actually married that nobody, Julian. Honestly, an elementary school teacher with no family background and no trust fund? What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking she would be quiet, obedient, and easy to manage," Julian replied smoothly, kissing Chloe’s forehead without a shred of remorse. "But she became a liability when she refused to sign the separation agreement quietly. Mother handled it brilliantly. The hospital administrators were more than happy to accept our substantial donation to the psychiatric ward in exchange for losing the CCTV footage of her departure."

"Everything is falling into place," Eleanor said, setting her glass down with a definitive clink. "With the Sterling capital merger being finalized at the Mid-Winter Charity Gala next Saturday, our credit lines will be fully restored. The banks will back off our construction loans, and Montgomery Real Estate will dominate the Midwest market."

Julian smiled out the window at the snow-covered grounds of his estate, feeling completely invincible. In his mind, Elena was already a frozen ghost, an insignificant footnote in his rise to the top of Chicago society. He had no idea that every word of their toast, every boast of their corruption, was currently being recorded by a microscopic audio bug that a Vance intelligence operative had spliced into the mansion's telecommunications wiring four hours earlier.
