Chapter 16 - The Allies Defect

When a high-society dynasty collapses into criminal disgrace, the surrounding parasites and fair-weather allies do not simply retreat; they actively cannibalize the fallen to prove their own innocence to the new apex predators.

By Wednesday morning, Chloe Sterling and her father, Richard Sterling, realized that the radioactivity of the Montgomery scandal was threatening to pull Sterling Maritime into the scope of federal investigations. Determined to save her family's shipping empire from Arthur Vance’s wrath, Chloe made a cold, calculated decision to sacrifice Julian completely.

At ten o'clock, Chloe arrived at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse downtown accompanied by a team of six criminal defense attorneys. She didn't enter through the side doors; she marched directly up the front steps through a gauntlet of flashing cameras and shouting reporters, stopping at a microphone stand her PR team had set up on the plaza.

"I want to make a formal, public statement to the city of Chicago and to Ms. Elena Vance," Chloe read from a prepared script, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion as she wiped away a theatrical tear. "Until the horrific audio recordings were released yesterday, I was completely deceived by Julian Montgomery. He lied to me, he lied to my family, and he concealed the monstrous crimes he committed against his wife and child."

She held up her left hand, conspicuously showing that the five-carat diamond engagement ring was gone.

"I have formally terminated my engagement to Julian Montgomery, and Sterling Maritime has permanently severed all business and legal ties with his enterprises," Chloe announced clearly. "Furthermore, half an hour ago, I signed a federal proffer agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office. I have voluntarily turned over Julian’s private journals, financial ledgers, and text messages—which confirm he premeditated this attempted murder weeks before the baby was born to clear his financial debts through a fraudulent marriage to me. I intend to testify as a primary witness for the prosecution in open court to ensure he faces the absolute maximum penalty under the law."

In a dingy, motel room on the outskirts of the city—where Julian had fled after being evicted from his office and forced to abandon his besieged Gold Coast mansion—he watched Chloe’s press conference on a cheap, static-filled television screen.

"You Judas bitch!" Julian screamed, hurling a half-empty bottle of bourbon at the screen. The glass shattered, cracking the display and plunging the room into silence.

He slumped onto the stained mattress, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. He was unshaven, wearing a wrinkled sweater, his credit cards declined, his phone buzzing with death threats from unknown numbers. The woman he had sold his soul to marry had just handed the federal prosecutors the exact blueprint of his premeditation to save her own skin.

He was completely alone, trapped in a closing perimeter of ice, with nowhere left to run.
