Chapter 5 - The Legal Shark

By the afternoon, Elena was sitting in a high-end corporate law office.

Her lawyer, Diane, was known as a merciless shark in family court.

"An annulment is perfectly viable here," Diane said, reviewing the marriage certificate.

"The marriage was never consummated, and he physically assaulted you."

Elena touched her cheek, which was still slightly red.

"I want everything strictly separated," Elena instructed firmly.

"He doesn't get a single dime of my money, my assets, or my family's wealth."

Diane smiled, a sharp and predatory grin.

"With the ironclad prenup your father insisted on, he leaves with nothing."

"In fact, we can sue him for the money spent on his personal debts."

Elena felt a wave of relief wash over her.

Meanwhile, Marcus was sitting in his parents' cramped living room, crying.

"I have no money, Mom!" he sobbed into his hands.

"I owe thirty thousand dollars on that sports car she co-signed!"

Chloe looked up from her laptop, looking genuinely terrified.

"Wait, did she cancel the family vacation to Hawaii?"

Arthur slammed his fist on the coffee table, startling everyone.

"Are you all blind?" Arthur yelled at his wife and children.

"You pushed the only good thing that ever happened to this family away!"

"Marcus, you hit your wife on the first day of your marriage!"

Marcus looked away, deeply ashamed but mostly terrified for his own future.
