Chapter 20 - Invisible

One year later, the winter snow fell softly over the streets of Boston.

Elena and David were walking out of a high-end Broadway theater, holding hands.

They wore matching designer coats, laughing at a joke David had made.

As they waited for their valet to bring the car, a shivering man walked by.

He was wearing a faded jacket, pushing a small cart of street-cleaning supplies.

It was Marcus.

He looked up and locked eyes with Elena for a split second.

His face drained of color, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and absolute regret.

He looked broken, aged beyond his years, and utterly defeated by life.

Elena stopped laughing, but her face showed absolutely zero emotion.

She didn't gloat, she didn't point, she didn't even smile.

She simply looked straight through him, as if he were completely invisible.

The valet pulled up in their shiny new Porsche.

David opened the door for her, kissing her cheek before she got in.

Elena drove away into the beautiful snowy night, leaving the past exactly where it belonged.

The story was over, and she had written a perfect ending.
