Chapter 7 - The Burner Phone

It was 2:00 AM when my cell phone vibrated on the bedside table.

I was half-asleep in the uncomfortable hospital chair.

The caller ID showed an unknown number.

Normally, I would ignore it, but a strange instinct told me to answer.

"Hello?" I whispered, not wanting to wake Chloe.

"She looks so peaceful when she sleeps," a chillingly familiar voice replied.

My heart stopped completely.

It was Arthur.

"Where are you?" I demanded, sitting bolt upright.

"You took my family away from me," he said calmly, ignoring my question.

"You turned my own son against me."

"You did this to yourself, Arthur," I hissed into the receiver.

"I just wanted to teach you a lesson," he chuckled darkly.

"Actions have consequences, my dear."

Before I could scream for the police detail outside the door, the line went dead.

I burst out of the room and grabbed the officer stationed in the hallway.

They immediately tried to trace the call.

It had come from a disposable cell phone, heavily encrypted.
