Chapter 15 - A Close Call

Two weeks passed in agonizingly slow motion inside the safe house.

Chloe was healing, but the scars on her face were becoming permanent red marks.

One evening, Marcus went down to the underground garage to retrieve groceries from the agents.

I was sitting in the living room reading a book to Chloe.

Suddenly, the secure radio on the kitchen counter squawked violently.

"Breach in the lower levels! Lock down the safe room!"

I dropped the book, scooped Chloe into my arms, and ran.

We locked ourselves in the reinforced steel panic room at the center of the apartment.

My hands were shaking violently as I held Chloe tight.

"Where is Daddy?" she cried, burying her face in my chest.

I couldn't answer her.

I pressed my ear against the cold steel door, listening to the muffled sounds of gunfire below.

Arthur had found us.

May you like

He had somehow tracked the federal agents or paid off an informant.

I closed my eyes and prayed that Marcus was still alive.
