Chapter 1 - The Evidence

The officer carefully picked up the unmarked plastic jug with a gloved hand.
He placed it into a clear evidence bag, sealing it tightly.
I stared at it, my stomach twisting into a painful knot.
That jug was the proof of Arthur’s twisted, premeditated cruelty.
He hadn't just made a mistake or bought a bad product.
He had deliberately emptied the shimmer gel and replaced it with a corrosive chemical.
Marcus paced the kitchen floor, running his hands over his face.
"I don't understand," he kept repeating, his voice trembling.
"My father wouldn't do this to his own granddaughter."
The older police officer looked at Marcus with a mixture of pity and suspicion.
"People are capable of terrible things, Mr. Vance," the officer said quietly.
"Right now, we need to know if he mentioned any travel plans."
I shook my head, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.
"He never talks about his plans with me," I whispered.
"He hates me, and this was his way of punishing me."
Marcus stopped pacing and looked at me, a flash of denial in his eyes.
