Chapter 6 - Country Club Arrest

My mother didn't fare any better.

She was mid-swing on the golf course when two plainclothes detectives approached her golf cart.

According to the police report, she tried to run away in her cleats.

She didn't make it far before they tackled her onto the pristine green grass.

They read her her Miranda rights while her wealthy friends watched in horrified silence.

Identity theft, wire fraud, and felony assault were on the warrant.

She screamed that it was all a mistake, that I was a crazy, vindictive daughter.

But the detectives already had the forged signatures and the IP addresses from her computer.

They also had the photos of my bruised stomach and the soaked maternity dress in an evidence bag.

They hauled her away in the back of a squad car, her perfectly styled hair ruined by the wind and the struggle.
