Chapter 3 - The Desperate Calls

By noon, my phone was blowing up.
My mother called me fourteen times in a row.
I didn't answer a single one.
Finally, she sent a frantic voice memo.
"You need to fix this right now! The bank is saying my accounts are locked due to a federal hold!"
Her voice wasn't arrogant anymore; it was laced with pure panic.
"I know you know people in banking, so you better get out of that hospital bed and make some calls!"
She still hadn't asked if my baby was alive.
She hadn't asked if I was okay.
I forwarded the voicemail directly to Agent Sarah Jenkins.
"Add witness tampering and intimidation to the list," I texted her.
My father tried a different approach, emailing me from his secure server.
"We need to talk about the family trust, I think there has been a massive misunderstanding."
There was no misunderstanding.
They had stolen everything, and now, they had nothing.

I turned my phone on silent and walked over to Mia's incubator.
"We are safe now, my sweet girl," I whispered to the glass.
