Chapter 4 - The Hero Returns

Later that afternoon, there was a soft knock on my hospital door.
I expected another nurse, but instead, Marcus walked in.
He was out of his valet uniform, wearing a simple t-shirt and holding a small stuffed teddy bear.
"I hope it’s okay that I came," he said nervously.
"I just needed to know if you and the baby made it."
Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the man who had saved my life.
"We are alive because of you, Marcus," I told him, my voice cracking.
He pulled up a chair and sat beside my bed.
He told me that after the ambulance took me away, my family just went back to partying.
"Your dad even tried to get me fired for leaving my post to jump in the pool," Marcus revealed.
My blood boiled at the thought of their heartlessness.
"Don't worry," I assured him. "They won't be in a position to fire anyone ever again."
I asked Marcus if he would be willing to give an official statement to the police.

He didn't even hesitate.
"I'll tell them everything I saw," he promised.
