Chapter 12 - The Indictments
The grand jury did not waste any time.
My parents were formally indicted on thirty-four counts of federal fraud and racketeering.
My mother was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (the stone railing).
Because of the severity of the financial crimes, they were denied bail.
They would be sitting in county jail until the trial began.
Their high-priced defense attorney dropped them when his retainer check bounced.
They were forced to use an overworked public defender who clearly hated them.
Chloe was slapped with a massive tax lien and charged with accessory to fraud.
She was living in a cheap motel on the bad side of town.
Agent Jenkins called to give me the update, sounding very satisfied.
