Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

Sarah arrived at the hospital within the hour.
She bypassed the waiting room and walked straight into the intensive care unit.
Her badge flashed under the harsh fluorescent lights, commanding immediate respect from the hospital staff.
When she saw me bruised and hooked up to monitors, her jaw tightened.
"I thought you were calling about a white-collar case," she whispered, looking through the glass at Mia’s tiny incubator.
I handed her the sealed flash drive I had hidden in my emergency hospital bag.
"It is white-collar, Sarah, but they made it personal."
I explained everything that had happened at the gender reveal party.
I told her about the push, the pool, and my father’s chilling words.
Sarah took out her notepad, her pen scratching furiously against the paper.
"Assault, attempted murder, and massive federal financial fraud," she muttered, shaking her head.
"They won't just lose their money, honey. They are going to lose their freedom."
I watched Mia's tiny chest rise and fall with the help of a ventilator.
"I want their accounts frozen by tomorrow morning," I demanded softly.
Sarah smiled a dangerous, predatory smile.

"Consider it done."
The storm was finally here, and my family had no idea they were standing right in its path.
