Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Country Club

The next morning, completely in denial about the gravity of their situation, Eleanor attempted to maintain her carefully curated high-society facade. She had hosted an annual charity luncheon at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club for years—a lavish event funded entirely by my military bonuses and credit cards.
She arrived in an Uber, walking into the grand dining room in her finest designer dress, acting as if her son’s life wasn't collapsing around his ears. When the club manager approached her table at the end of the four-course meal with the $3,500 master bill, she smoothly handed him her favorite platinum rewards card.

Three minutes later, the manager returned. His voice was polite, but loud enough for the surrounding tables of wealthy suburbanites to hear clearly. "Mrs. Vance, I'm sorry, but this card has been permanently deactivated by the primary account holder. We also tried running your secondary club account, but the primary member has removed your name and suspended all billing privileges."
Eleanor turned bright magenta as whispers erupted across the room. She fumbled through her purse, pulling out three different cards—all of which were declined in rapid succession. She had spent a decade bragging to these women about her son’s "high-flying career," concealing the fact that she was living on a military daughter-in-law's dime. Humiliated, penniless, and forced to leave her designer watch as collateral just to leave the building, Eleanor’s social standing evaporated in less than ten minutes.
