Chapter 7 - The Repo Man Cometh

By mid-afternoon, the financial dominoes I had tipped at dawn began to crash through my suburban driveway. Because Marcus’s luxury SUV was purchased entirely under my name and credit history—with me making every single payment—I had called the financing company at 7:00 AM to voluntarily surrender the vehicle, citing unauthorized use by a third party and refusing further liability.

From my office monitor, I watched the high-definition feed of a heavy-duty commercial tow truck backing into my driveway. Two burly recovery agents jumped out and rapidly hooked the hydraulic lift to the front axle of Marcus’s prized SUV.

The front door of the house flew open. Eleanor came charging out onto the lawn in her slippers, waving her arms wildly, followed by a frantic Marcus.

"Hey! Drop the truck! That's my vehicle!" Marcus screamed, grabbing the driver's side door handle.

The repo man calmly stepped between Marcus and the truck, holding up a digital clipboard. "Vehicle is registered solely to Colonel Sarah Vance. She initiated a voluntary repossession and lease termination this morning. Step away from the equipment, sir, or I’ll call local dispatch to remove you."

I watched Eleanor literally drop to her knees on the manicured grass as the tow truck hoisted the front wheels into the air and pulled away, leaving Marcus standing in an empty driveway with nothing but his phone and his mounting terror.
