Chapter 6 - The Emergency Briefing

While Marcus was being escorted away from the base perimeter, I was stepping into the most critical intelligence briefing of my career. A high-level congressional delegation had arrived at the Pentagon via secure video link to review our wing’s defense capabilities against an active cyber intrusion targeting defense contractors.
I stood at the center of the amphitheater, delivering a seamless, thirty-minute technical breakdown of our counter-offensive protocols. My voice was unwavering, my data points precise, and my strategic vision flawless. The two-star general who had promoted me the day before nodded in deep approval from the front row.
"Colonel," the General said over the microphone when I finished, "your command has executed this transition with zero friction. You look born for this role."

"Thank you, General," I replied firmly. "Clarity of purpose is everything in our line of work. When you eliminate internal distractions, the mission succeeds."
As the applause echoed through the briefing room, the contrast between my two realities was jarring yet liberating. At home, I was treated like a disobedient servant whose physical appearance could be mutilated for control. Here, I was a respected military tactician safeguarding national security. The woman who had bled on her pillowcase was gone; only the Colonel remained.
