Chapter 2 - The Frozen Assets

I woke up the next morning on the guest bed of Harrison’s highly secure penthouse apartment in downtown Los Angeles.
The sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows felt like a cruel joke compared to the darkness consuming my life.
I picked up my cell phone and opened my banking application, bracing myself for the inevitable blow.
Just as Harrison had predicted, every single joint account, credit card, and investment portfolio was locked down.
Julian had moved with terrifying speed, employing his army of corporate lawyers to cut off my financial lifeblood.
I had zero access to the millions we had supposedly built together over our five-year marriage.
Harrison walked into the kitchen carrying two mugs of decaf coffee and a thick stack of printed documents.
"He filed the emergency divorce petition at 8:00 AM sharp," Harrison announced, setting the papers on the granite island.
"He is officially citing adultery and demanding a paternity test the moment the child is born."
I took a slow sip of the warm coffee, letting the bitter taste match the fury bubbling in my chest.
"How does he plan to fake a paternity test when I have never been with another man?" I asked, genuinely baffled.
"Julian owns a biomedical tech firm, Evelyn; he has unlimited access to the best private laboratories in the world," Harrison reminded me.
"He doesn't need the truth; he just needs a piece of paper that looks legitimate enough to sway a judge."
My heart hammered violently against my ribs as my baby gave a sudden, sharp kick.
"He is trying to legally erase his own daughter to save a fraction of his billion-dollar net worth," I whispered in horror.
"We need to find out exactly which lab he plans to use," Harrison said, tapping his pen against the counter.
"And we need to find the specific doctor he is paying off to falsify these medical records."
I nodded, my mind racing back to a bizarre medical appointment Julian had forced me to attend three months ago.

"Harrison, I think I know where to start looking," I said, a dangerous spark of realization hitting me.
We were going to follow the trail of dirty money.
