Chapter 17 - The Divorce Settlement

Three weeks later, Elena sat in a sterile conference room at the prison.

Mateo sat across from her, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit.

He looked aged, exhausted, and completely broken.

Richard Vance placed the divorce papers on the table.

"Sign it, and I won't pursue civil damages for the domestic violence," Elena stated coldly.

Mateo looked at the papers.

The settlement left him with absolutely nothing.

No alimony, no properties, no bank accounts, and a mountain of legal debt.

"Did you ever really love me?" Mateo asked, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation.

Elena looked at him without a single trace of pity.

"I loved the man you pretended to be, but that man never actually existed."

Mateo slowly picked up the pen and signed his name on the dotted line.

Elena took the paper, stood up, and never looked back.
