Chapter 16 - The Interrogation

Mateo sat in the cold, gray interrogation room, shivering in his ruined tuxedo.
A detective tossed a thick folder of evidence onto the metal table.
"Your wife gave us everything, Mateo."
They had the offshore accounts, the forged signatures, and the voice memos from Chloe.
Mateo tried to blame his mother, claiming Beatrice forced him to steal the money.
In the room next door, Beatrice was screaming that Mateo was the mastermind.
They were tearing each other apart like cornered rats.
The detective played Mateo a recording of Chloe testifying against him.
Mateo buried his face in his hands, realizing he had absolutely zero leverage.
He was facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary.
