The drive to the safehouse was completely silent.
Elena gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Rosa sat in the passenger seat, gently rubbing her bruised neck.
Once they were safely inside the rented townhouse, Elena opened her encrypted laptop.
She logged into the joint accounts she shared with Mateo.
She expected to see his usual careless spending, maybe some expensive dinners or designer suits.
Instead, she found a series of massive, recurring wire transfers to an offshore shell company.
The company was registered under the name "BeaMont Holdings."
Elena felt a cold smile creep across her face.
She knew instantly that Beatrice and Mateo were hiding assets.
They were siphoning money from his real estate clients to fund Beatrice’s failing estate.
Mateo wasn't just a terrible husband.
He was a corporate fraud committing federal crimes.
Elena dialed her attorney’s number at two in the morning.
"I need you to freeze everything by sunrise," she whispered.
