Chapter 9 - The Ambush

Two days later, I was back at the office. Clara was safe at home with a licensed night-nurse we had hired to help with Maya. I was just wrapping up a quarterly risk report when my desk phone rang. It was the lobby security desk.

"Mr. Vance? We have a woman down here claiming to be your mother. She's causing quite a scene, demanding you come down. She says she needs to give you an envelope."

Eleanor had been served the restraining order that morning, and in her narcissistic rage, she had driven straight to my corporate headquarters to confront me. She wanted to humiliate me in front of my colleagues.

"Do not let her up," I instructed calmly. "She has an active protective order against her. Call the police, tell them she is violating the order, and keep her contained in the lobby until they arrive."

I walked over to the glass wall of my office and looked down at the street level thirty-eight floors below. I was done playing her games.
