Neutralizing her social leverage wasn't enough. Eleanor was unhinged, and unhinged threats escalate when cornered.

The next morning, I hired the most ruthless family law attorney in Chicago. We were filing for an Emergency Protective Order.

Sitting in the lawyer’s mahogany-paneled office, I handed over a flash drive containing the footage, aggressive voicemails Eleanor had left after being evicted, and the medical reports from Clara’s emergency room visit detailing the torn sutures.

"She assaulted a vulnerable adult and endangered a minor," the lawyer said, adjusting his glasses as he watched the video.

"Mr. Vance, most restraining orders are a coin toss. This? This is a slam dunk. We'll have a temporary order signed by a judge by 4:00 PM today. She won't be allowed within 500 feet of your home, your workplace, or your family."

I signed the paperwork without hesitation. It was the ultimate failsafe.
