Chapter 14 - The Final Consequence

I turned on the sunroom lights. Eleanor shrieked, dropping the crowbar as the space flooded with blinding illumination.
I walked up to the inner glass door, holding a cup of coffee, and looked at her through the reinforced pane. She began beating on the glass, screaming obscenities that I couldn't hear through the soundproofing.
Within four minutes, the wail of sirens shattered the quiet suburban night. Three squad cars pulled into my backyard. Officers approached the sunroom with weapons drawn.
I unlocked the outer door remotely, and they dragged her out.

Because she had broken into the property with a tool, it wasn't just a restraining order violation anymore. It was felony aggravated burglary and stalking.
As they read her her rights, Eleanor looked at me through the police car window. The arrogance was finally gone, replaced by the hollow, terrifying realization that she had destroyed her own life. She was going away to state prison.
