Chapter 10 - The Arrest

By the time I took the elevator down to the lobby, two Chicago Police cruisers were parked outside.

I walked through the turnstiles just in time to see an officer securing handcuffs around Eleanor's wrists. She was screaming wildly, her perfectly coiffed hair a mess.

"You can't do this! I am his mother! Michael, tell them to let me go! I brought you a letter!"

I walked up to the officers, presenting my ID and a copy of the freshly stamped restraining order. "Thank you, officers. I am the petitioner."

Eleanor stared at me, her eyes wide with a mix of fury and disbelief. "You're sending your own mother to jail? Over a stupid little push?"

"You tried to break my wife," I said, my voice carrying no emotion, only cold, hard fact. "Enjoy the cell, Eleanor."

I turned my back on her and walked away as they escorted her to the cruiser. It was the most liberating moment of my life.
