For three months, we had absolute peace. The security cameras detected nothing but neighborhood cats.
Clara’s physical recovery progressed beautifully. The color returned to her cheeks, and she was finally able to hold Maya and walk around the house without pain. We were reclaiming our sanctuary.
But as a risk assessor, I knew that a dormant threat is not a neutralized threat. Eleanor's silence felt unnatural. She had lost her family, her reputation, and her control. People like her don't just move on; they obsess.
One evening in late October, Clara and I were watching a movie when my phone vibrated. It wasn't the nursery camera this time. It was the perimeter alarm.
