Chapter 1 - The Whisper and the Drive

Through the audio feed of the nursery camera, Eleanor’s venomous whisper finally reached my ears, slicing through the static.

“You are weak, Clara. And once Michael realizes he married a burden instead of a partner, he’s going to leave you. Get up, or I’ll tell him you dropped the baby.”

My blood didn't just turn to ice; it boiled. I didn't say a word to the executives in that boardroom. I simply grabbed my keys, walked out, and hit the elevator button.

By the time the doors opened on the ground floor, I was already on the phone with an emergency locksmith. My mind, trained to assess and neutralize risks, shifted into absolute overdrive.

The drive home was a blur of traffic lights and white-knuckle gripping of the steering wheel. Every second felt like an hour.

I kept the app open on my passenger seat, watching my wife sobbing on the floor as my mother casually walked out of the room, leaving Clara helpless.

I was twenty minutes away. I calculated the variables. I needed to remove the threat, secure the perimeter, and stabilize the victims.

Eleanor wasn't just a toxic mother-in-law anymore; she was an active threat to my family's survival. And I was about to become her worst nightmare.
