Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Shelter

Because of the severe nature of the threats and David’s wealth, the police helped me secure a spot in a high-security domestic violence shelter. It was clean, hidden, and impenetrable.
David landed in Houston at 9:00 PM. I knew this because my phone immediately began to blow up with texts. The tone had shifted entirely from arrogant annoyance to absolute, unhinged panic.
“Where are they taking my parents? Clara, what did you do?!” “Answer the phone, you psycho! You can’t put my family in jail!” “I will destroy you in court. You are never seeing Mia again.”
I didn't reply. I just forwarded every single text to Detective Ramirez and the lawyer I had contacted earlier that day.
By midnight, David had somehow tracked down the cheap motel we had stayed at the night before. The front desk clerk called the police when a wealthy man in a suit started screaming in the lobby and kicking doors, demanding to see his wife.

The police arrived and detained him. They informed him that his wife and child were under police protection and that if he tried to contact me again, he would be joining his parents in a holding cell.
Sitting in the quiet, safe room of the shelter, holding a sleeping Mia in my arms, I finally felt the adrenaline leave my body. The tears came, but they weren't tears of sadness. They were tears of pure, focused determination. I was going to burn his entire empire to the ground.
